Hearing Loss Linked to Many Health and Lifestyle Triggers

Jan 29, 2019

Lifestyle and Hearing LossHearing loss has long been accepted as a sure sign of aging. With approximately 48 million Americans experiencing hearing impairment, it’s more than likely you know a senior citizen or two who wears hearing aids. But did you know that there are MANY factors, in addition to age, that can impair hearing? Consumer Reports recently listed the following as possible links to hearing loss – some of the results may surprise you!

Medications can affect hearing

Drugs have a useful place in our society; without them, some medical conditions would cause lifelong impairment, or even worse, death. The usage of some medications, however, can lead to increased risk of hearing loss or tinnitus. This is especially true if they are taken in large doses or used over long time periods. Such medications include aspirin, acetaminophen, and cisplatin, a chemotherapy drug. Check with your doctor if you are concerned that your prescription medications might damage your hearing.

Infections can cause hearing loss

Ear infections, especially in young children, often cause changes in hearing. Other infections, including upper respiratory ones, can affect hearing as well. Hearing loss is often temporary and clears up when the infection is gone. If left untreated, however, the infection can cause permanent hearing loss. When in doubt, seek the advice of your physician to determine if you have an infection and how it should be treated.

Earwax buildup can impair hearing

Sometimes, hearing loss occurs from something as simple as excess earwax. While earwax is a natural part of the ear’s defense system, too much of it can impair hearing. If done incorrectly, trying to remove it can further damage the ear. If in doubt, it’s best to leave earwax removal up to a professional who can do it safely and effectively.

Health and lifestyle conditions that impact hearing loss

Many health conditions can lead to an increased risk of hearing loss. For example, impaired vascular circulation in individuals with diabetes or high cholesterol is thought to impair hearing, while the tiny bones of the ear can be damaged in people with osteoporosis. Prevention or proper management of these diseases can lessen their effect on hearing.

Unhealthy lifestyles, such as smoking or not exercising, can also negatively impact hearing. Experts agree that leading a healthy, active lifestyle, while avoiding exposure to loud noises, can help to stave off hearing loss as long as possible. If hearing impairment does occur, schedule an appointment with an audiologist or other hearing professional to determine and receive the appropriate treatment.
