Can Hearing Loss Cause Financial Loss?
A national study by the Better Hearing Institute (BHI) found that people with untreated hearing loss lose as much as $30,000 in income annually, depending on their degree of hearing loss. This study revealed that there is a connection between hearing loss and unemployment or partial employment. Hearing impaired individuals typically make lower wages than their counterparts as well. Hearing loss not only has a devastating effect on an individual’s quality of life; impacting their psychological, social, cognitive well-being; it also impacts financial well-being.

Studies show people with hearing loss typically suffer from financial loss as well. Studies also suggest a correlation between hearing loss and unemployment.

The BHI study found that the use of hearing aids reduced the risk of income loss dramatically—by 90 to 100 percent for those with milder hearing loss, and from 65 to 77 percent for those whose hearing loss was severe to moderate. The study also found that people with severe hearing loss who do use hearing aids are nearly twice as likely to be employed as their peers who do not use them.
