How Does Smoking Damage My Hearing?

The dangers of smoking cannot be overstated. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that cigarette smoking causes about one out of every five deaths in the United States each year. Along with cancers and other health risks, smoking has also been determined to cause hearing loss.

The amount of cigarettes smoked per day appears to be directly correlated to the severity of damage done to the ear. Nicotine as well as some of the other toxic substances found in cigarettes damages both the middle ear mechanisms as well as the inner ear. Nicotine has also been shown to impair the brain’s ability to hear and interpret sounds.

Among other ailments, smoking causes hearing loss by damaging both the middle ear mechanisms as well as the inner ear.

What Can I Do?

Quitting smoking can help alleviate the risk of hearing loss, although if you suspect that damage has already been done, call Advanced Hearing Group to schedule an evaluation and a hearing test. Early intervention is the key to successful treatment.
